How to use this tool

Calculate the elapsed hours and minutes between two clock times. Results include hours and minutes, decimal hours, and total minutes, with an explicit option for periods that continue past midnight.

  1. STEP 1Enter the start and end times.
  2. STEP 2Select the next-day option when the end occurs after midnight.
  3. STEP 3Calculate to see the duration in three useful formats.

The result is end time minus start time. For an overnight period, 24 hours is added to the end time before subtracting the start.

All inputs and calculations stay in your browser; TimeKit does not send your entries to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate time across midnight?

Enter the two clock times and select “End time is on the next day.” The calculator then includes the midnight rollover.

Why are decimal hours useful?

Payroll and billing systems often use decimal hours. For example, 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50 hours, not 7.30.
