A typical year contains about 260 Monday-to-Friday weekdays before public holidays and leave are removed. The exact number depends on the year, the workweek, the country, and the organization.
The Baseline: 260 Weekdays
A calendar year contains 52 complete weeks plus one extra day in a common year, or two extra days in a leap year.
Each complete Monday-to-Friday week contributes five weekdays:
52 × 5 = 260 weekdays
The remaining one or two dates determine whether the final total is higher.
Exact Weekday Range
In a 365-day common year, there are either 260 or 261 weekdays. The single extra date adds one weekday only when it falls Monday through Friday.
In a 366-day leap year, there are 260, 261, or 262 weekdays. The two extra consecutive dates may include zero, one, or two weekdays.
So the exact Monday-to-Friday range is:
- Common year: 260 or 261 weekdays
- Leap year: 260 to 262 weekdays
These totals still include public holidays.
Weekdays Are Not Always Working Days
A weekday is simply Monday through Friday. A working day is a date on which a particular person or organization is scheduled to work.
To estimate actual workdays:
Actual workdays = Scheduled weekdays - observed holidays - planned leave - closures
Then add any scheduled weekend shifts if they count as workdays.
Public holidays differ by country, state, province, city, employer, and industry. A holiday on Saturday or Sunday may be observed on a nearby weekday, so counting holiday names is not enough. Use the dates that the organization actually observes.
A Practical Annual Calculation
Start with the exact weekday count for the target year. Suppose the year has 261 weekdays.
- Subtract 10 observed weekday holidays: 251
- Subtract 15 vacation days: 236
- Subtract 5 planned training or closure days if they are not worked: 231
The result is 231 scheduled working days for that example. Sick leave is usually not removed when planning capacity unless it is being estimated as an average.
Working Hours in a Year
Multiply actual workdays by scheduled hours per day.
If a schedule has 251 working days at 8 hours per day:
251 × 8 = 2,008 hours
For a 7.5-hour day, the same calendar gives 1,882.5 hours. Overtime, unpaid breaks, part-time schedules, and compressed workweeks change the total.
Four-Day and Nonstandard Workweeks
For a regular four-day schedule, begin with 52 × 4 = 208 scheduled weekdays, then account for the extra one or two dates and any holidays that land on scheduled workdays.
Do not start from 260 and subtract one weekday per week. A calendar-based count is more reliable because the chosen day off and holiday observance affect the result.
Business Days for Deadlines
Contractual business days may not equal an employee's workdays. A company can define business days as Monday through Friday excluding named bank holidays, even when some employees work weekends.
For a deadline, use the definition in the agreement. For staffing, use the person's real schedule.
