Why Is My Computer Clock Wrong? Causes and Fixes

A computer clock can be wrong for several different reasons. The pattern of the error is more useful than repeatedly changing the time by hand.
Off by Whole Hours
Start with the time zone. A clock that is exactly one, five, or eight hours off often has the wrong regional setting or UTC offset. Check whether daylight saving time is enabled only where it should be. Correcting the zone preserves the actual instant while displaying it locally.
Gradually Losing Minutes
All inexpensive hardware clocks drift a little. If the difference grows over days or weeks, automatic network synchronization may be disabled, blocked by a firewall, or prevented by an incorrect network configuration. Enable automatic time and confirm the device can reach its configured time source.
Resets After Power Loss
If the date returns to an old year after a desktop has been unplugged, the small battery that powers the real-time clock may be depleted. A laptop can show a similar symptom after a complete battery failure. Record the behavior before considering hardware service.
Large, Sudden Jumps
Manual changes, virtual machines resumed from snapshots, dual-boot operating systems, and a bad synchronization source can cause larger jumps. These can affect log order, scheduled tasks, and certificate checks. Review recent system changes and avoid using time changes to work around security warnings.
A Sensible Fix Order
Check the time zone, turn on automatic synchronization, restart the connection if needed, and compare the result with a trusted clock. Only then set the time manually. If the problem returns, treat it as a configuration or hardware issue rather than a display issue.
