The safest way to add or subtract time is to convert the duration to one unit, perform the arithmetic, and then convert the result back to hours and minutes. This avoids mistakes when minutes cross 60 or a clock time crosses midnight.

Method 1: Work With Hours and Minutes

Add minutes first. Every complete group of 60 minutes becomes one hour.

Suppose you add 2 hours 35 minutes to 9:50 AM:

  • Minutes: 50 + 35 = 85 minutes
  • Convert 85 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes
  • Hours: 9 + 2 + 1 carried hour = 12
  • Result: 12:25 PM

For subtraction, borrow one hour as 60 minutes when the starting minute value is too small.

Method 2: Convert Everything to Minutes

Convert a clock time to minutes after midnight:

total minutes = hours × 60 + minutes

For 2:20 PM, use 14:20 on a 24-hour clock:

14 × 60 + 20 = 860 minutes

Adding 95 minutes gives 955. Divide by 60: 15 hours with 55 minutes remaining. The result is 15:55, or 3:55 PM.

This method is especially reliable in spreadsheets and code.

Adding Time Across Midnight

A day contains 1,440 minutes. If an addition reaches 1,440 or more, subtract 1,440 for each complete day and advance the calendar date.

Example: 10:30 PM is 22:30, or 1,350 minutes after midnight. Add 240 minutes:

1,350 + 240 = 1,590

Subtract 1,440 to get 150 minutes on the next day. That is 2:30 AM tomorrow.

Subtracting Time Across Midnight

If subtraction produces a negative value, add 1,440 and move the result to the previous day.

Example: subtract 3 hours from 1:15 AM. In minutes, 1:15 AM is 75. Three hours is 180 minutes:

75 − 180 = -105

Add 1,440 to get 1,335 minutes, which is 22:15 or 10:15 PM on the previous day.

Adding Durations vs Finding Elapsed Time

These are related but different calculations:

  • Add time: start at a clock time and move forward by a duration
  • Subtract time: start at a clock time and move backward by a duration
  • Find duration: subtract a start timestamp from an end timestamp

If a shift runs from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, you are finding the 8-hour-30-minute difference. If a meeting starts at 9:00 AM and lasts 8 hours 30 minutes, you are adding that duration to find 5:30 PM.

Decimal Hours Are Not Clock Minutes

The digits after a decimal point represent fractions of an hour, not clock minutes.

  • 1 hour 30 minutes = 1.50 hours
  • 1 hour 15 minutes = 1.25 hours
  • 1 hour 45 minutes = 1.75 hours

Writing 1.30 hours for 1 hour 30 minutes is incorrect; 0.30 hour equals 18 minutes.

Daylight Saving and Calendar Arithmetic

Ordinary clock arithmetic treats every day as 24 hours. Real timestamps in a named time zone can cross a daylight-saving change, creating a 23- or 25-hour local date.

For a reminder expressed as “in eight hours,” add elapsed hours. For “same local time tomorrow,” use calendar-aware date arithmetic. The two can differ around a clock change.

  • Use the 24-hour clock to remove AM/PM ambiguity
  • Convert durations to minutes or seconds
  • Carry every 60 minutes into one hour

  • Track whether the date moved forward or backward
