What Time Will It Be in 8 Hours? Calculation Guide

Add eight hours to any starting time, handle midnight correctly, and check what local date and time it will be eight hours from now.

What Time Will It Be in 8 Hours? Calculation Guide editorial illustration

To find what time it will be in eight hours, add 8 to the current hour and keep the minutes unchanged. If the result passes midnight, subtract 24 from the hour and advance the date by one day.

The exact answer depends on the starting time and your local time zone. For an immediate result, enter 8 in the Hours From Now Calculator. The method below lets you check the answer by hand.

The Basic Rule

On a 24-hour clock, the calculation is direct:

future hour = starting hour + 8

If the future hour is 24 or greater, subtract 24 and use the next date. The minutes and seconds normally remain the same.

For example, 09:20 plus eight hours is 17:20, which is 5:20 PM. Starting at 19:20 produces 27:20; subtracting 24 gives 03:20 on the next day.

Eight-Hour Examples

  • 1:00 AM + 8 hours = 9:00 AM
  • 6:30 AM + 8 hours = 2:30 PM
  • 10:15 AM + 8 hours = 6:15 PM
  • 1:45 PM + 8 hours = 9:45 PM
  • 5:30 PM + 8 hours = 1:30 AM the next day
  • 9:00 PM + 8 hours = 5:00 AM the next day
  • 11:50 PM + 8 hours = 7:50 AM the next day

Notice that adding whole hours preserves the minute value. Only the hour and possibly the date change.

Using 12-Hour Time

You can count forward on a clock face, but converting to 24-hour time reduces AM/PM mistakes. Change afternoon and evening times to hours 13 through 23, add eight, wrap at 24, and then convert back if needed.

Suppose the starting time is 8:40 PM. That is 20:40. Add eight hours to get 28:40, then subtract 24. The result is 04:40, or 4:40 AM tomorrow.

Does Eight Hours From Now Mean Today or Tomorrow?

It remains the same calendar date when the starting time is before 4:00 PM. At 4:00 PM or later, an eight-hour addition reaches or crosses midnight.

The boundary depends on seconds as well. Eight hours from 3:59:59 PM is 11:59:59 PM the same day. Eight hours from exactly 4:00 PM is midnight at the start of the following date.

Daylight Saving Time

“Eight hours from now” usually means eight elapsed hours. Around a daylight-saving transition, the displayed local clock can move forward or backward while those eight hours pass.

Adding eight elapsed hours to a timestamp is not always identical to moving the wall clock forward by eight labeled hour numbers. Use a time-zone-aware calculator when the interval crosses a DST change, especially for travel, medicine, system events, or deadlines.

Time Zone Matters

The instant eight hours from now is the same worldwide, but different locations display different local dates and times for that instant. If you are coordinating with someone elsewhere, state the time zone or convert the result to both locations.

The Answer

Add eight to the starting hour, preserve the minutes, and move to the next date if the total reaches 24. For the live local answer, use the Hours From Now Calculator so the current time and your device time zone are included automatically.
