How Many Weekend Days Are There in a Year?

A year usually has 104 weekend days, but the total can be 105 or 106. See how the starting weekday and leap years change the answer.

Most people learn that a year has 104 weekend days because 52 Saturdays plus 52 Sundays equals 104. That is the guaranteed baseline, but some years have 105 or even 106 weekend days.

Why 104 Is the Baseline

Fifty-two complete weeks contain 104 weekend days:

52 × 2 = 104

A common year has one additional day after those weeks. A leap year has two. Whether those extra days land on Saturday or Sunday determines the final weekend count.

Common Years: 104 or 105

A 365-day year is 52 weeks plus one day. If that extra day is Saturday or Sunday, the year has 105 weekend days. Otherwise it has 104.

Equivalently, look at January 1. If a common year starts on Saturday or Sunday, that weekday occurs 53 times.

Leap Years: 104, 105, or 106

A 366-day year is 52 weeks plus two consecutive days. If neither extra day is on the weekend, the total is 104. If one is Saturday or Sunday, the total is 105. If the pair is Saturday and Sunday, the leap year has 106 weekend days.

Weekend Does Not Always Mean Nonworking

Some organizations use rotating schedules, compressed workweeks, or local weekends on different days. “Weekend days” is a calendar definition; “days off” is an employment rule.

Public holidays also need separate treatment. A holiday on Monday does not increase the number of Saturdays and Sundays, but it may increase nonworking days. A holiday observed on Friday after falling on Saturday can create another day off without changing the weekend count.

How to Calculate a Specific Year

Count each date whose weekday belongs to the weekend definition. For a standard Saturday-Sunday weekend, a calendar or date library can filter for those two weekday values. Include January 1 and December 31 if the question covers the whole year.

Quick Answer

  • Common year: 104 or 105 Saturday-Sunday days
  • Leap year: 104, 105, or 106 Saturday-Sunday days
  • Minimum guaranteed by 52 full weeks: 104

Use the specific year's calendar when the one- or two-day difference affects staffing, billing, or delivery commitments.
