How Many Saturdays Are in a Year? 52 or 53
Most years have 52 Saturdays; some have 53. See which years get the extra one, why it happens, and how to check any year in seconds.
Most years have 52 Saturdays. Some have 53. Which one you get depends on a single fact: what weekday the year starts on.
The Rule Behind Every Answer
A common year is 365 days. Divide by seven and you get 52 weeks with one day left over. That leftover day is the weekday January 1 falls on, and it is the only weekday that occurs 53 times.
A leap year is 366 days: 52 weeks plus two leftover days. Those are the weekdays of January 1 and January 2, and both occur 53 times.
So the answer is never a mystery. Look at what day the year starts on, check whether it is a leap year, and you have it.
Which Years Have 53 Saturdays
A year has 53 Saturdays when it begins on a Saturday, or when it is a leap year beginning on a Friday.
- 2028 — leap year starting Saturday
- 2033 — common year starting Saturday
- 2039 — common year starting Saturday
Between those, every year has exactly 52.
2026 Has 52 Saturdays
2026 is a common year that begins on a Thursday, so Thursday is the weekday that appears 53 times. Saturday appears 52 times, the first on January 3 and the last on December 26.
Why This Matters More Than It Looks
A 53rd Saturday shifts anything scheduled by the week rather than by the month:
- Weekly payroll runs 53 times instead of 52, which is an extra payroll cycle to budget for.
- Saturday-only businesses get one more trading day, roughly a 2% swing in annual revenue.
- Rotas and shift patterns built on a 52-week cycle fall a week out of alignment.
Saturdays and Weekend Days Are Different Questions
A year with 53 Saturdays does not automatically have 106 weekend days. That needs 53 Saturdays *and* 53 Sundays, which only happens in a leap year that starts on Saturday — 2028 is the next one. See [how many weekend days are in a year](/blog/weekend-days-in-a-year) for the full breakdown.
Checking Any Year Yourself
Find the weekday of January 1. If it is Saturday, the year has 53. If the year is a leap year and January 1 is a Friday, January 2 is a Saturday, so it also has 53. Everything else has 52.
