Where the Tradition Comes From
The concept may trace back to the biblical breastplate of Aaron, described in the Book of Exodus, which held twelve gemstones representing the tribes of Israel. Scholars later connected these twelve stones to the twelve months and the twelve zodiac signs.
The modern list most people use was standardized by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912, with a few additions since.
Traditional vs Modern Stones
Some months have both a "traditional" and a "modern" birthstone. For example, March's traditional stone was bloodstone, but aquamarine became the popular modern choice. This is why you'll sometimes see different stones listed for the same month.
A Personal Touch
Birthstones turn a birthday into something tangible. Whether you believe in their protective powers or simply enjoy the symbolism, knowing the gem tied to your birth month adds a small layer of meaning to your personal calendar.
